From: [personal profile] sathari
Eeeep, eeeeep, eeeeeeeeep, your Kylo Ren prompts! I love all of them!!!! Like, they should be in my giftbox because writing about Ben|Kylo's issues with his mother and grandfather is my jam! And, um, I even managed to work in Vader's helmet! Also, these were not written specifically for your giftbox, but I saw that meta was one of your requested media type, and I am here for your meta needs: have my omnibus post on What's Wrong of the Skywalker Family with emphasis on Ben's upbringing, and then How Ben reacted to the Vader reveal" which a) is spoilery for Bloodline and b) is reproduced in the fic below. (Actually, this fic draws a lot on both those metas, or rather they all come out of the same place in my head.)

No Angel Came

A/n: Title is from Tori Amos’ "Juarez". My idea of Ben’s sensory-integration issues as a result of cutting himself off from the Force were inspired by Oliver Sacks’ "To See and Not See".

Content notes: Attempted quasi-suicide (because Force ghosts make everything weird about that), ongoing extreme emotional distress including attachment issues and PTSD, arrested psychosocial development, and three well-meaning and loving adults who manage nonetheless to totally screw a kid up.

Ben Solo Organa is a natural telepath.

Or rather, that’s just how his particular sensitivity to the Force works. When he touches the Force at all--- which he does as naturally and normally as his Uncle Luke pilots any kind of ship ever and makes deadeye shots with ranged weapons--- he just hears the thoughts of the people around him.

Dad thinks it’s pretty wizard, when Ben tells him.

And it’s Dad Ben tells, because it’s Dad Ben spends most of his time with. There are the nursedroids and nannies, but the organic nannies change every time the New Republic’s capital changes.

Mama says that’s because it’s good politics, to hire local people. And also that the Empire was human-centric and Ben, don’t you want to get to know lots of other species and cultures?

Ben does not mind getting to know lots of different kinds of people. (Like Dad and Uncle Chewie are partners.) But he would also like to keep some of them. Not have them leave him.

But at least Dad and Uncle Chewie are always around--- there’s not a day that Dad doesn’t swoop into the nursery to take Ben off for an adventure with him and Uncle Chewie.

Uncle Luke isn’t around. Uncle Luke is off looking for Jedi artifacts, which means stuff, most of the time, and he only visits now and then. Which isn’t any different from Ben’s other uncles--- Uncle Lando and Uncle Wedge, for example--- because they have other things to do, too, except that Uncle Luke is Mama’s brother (and Ben thinks vaguely that that ought to mean he’s around for her, at least, because Uncle Chewie isn’t even Dad’s same species but he’s always around for Dad, and Ben, but apparently it doesn’t).

But when they are around, he can feel it. That they love him. Especially Dad. And Uncle Chewie.

He knows about Mama’s shields. He’s grown up hearing, when Uncle Luke is even there, that Mama has the strongest natural Force shields in, maybe, ever. And they are what let her hide right under the Emperor’s nose and Darth Vader’s.

It doesn’t mean she can’t use the Force, exactly--- he knows she and Uncle Luke talk with it, because she tells him and Dad and Uncle Chewie how Uncle Luke’s doing.

But he can’t hear her. Can’t just pick up thoughts from her. And she never tries to talk to him like that.

Not even just to say, I love you, in his head. In his head, where he could believe it.

She says it with words, of course. But.

For one thing, he knows from listening to Dad that people can lie. There are lots of family stories about that, the tricks that Dad or Uncle Lando played on people. It’s practically the first thing Dad had said when Ben told him--- that nobody could get one over on Ben, because of it. And Dad had thought that didn’t it beat all that the Force he hadn’t believed in until he was a grown man had turned around and given him the best little sidekick ever for a son. Which Ben had thought was the best thing in the galaxy.

(It’s always Dad that Ben wants to be just like when he grows up.)

And for another--- Mama is a Senator. And he knows that Senators lie. He’s heard them, when he sneaks out of the nursery to listen, ears and mind, while Mama and her Senator friends all talk about politics. He knows they’re all saying one thing and holding others back.

Which means that as far as Ben can tell, politics is not that much different than playing sabacc.

When he says that to Dad, Dad laughs and agrees. And Uncle Lando says he’s got a point, except the stakes are even higher.

But--- Mama is a Senator. And he can’t hear her thoughts. So he doesn’t know when she’s lying. Like he does with everybody else.

And Mama is also just--- not there very much. Mama is off being a Senator, which means that she gets up early and comes home late.

The fifteen minutes at each end of the day when Mama puts up her hair in one of a dozen dozen different ways are about the only time that Mama is home and sitting still and not working (Ben, sweetheart, I’m busy, where are your nannies---) and so at four Ben starts learning how to help her fix her hair, because that is a way to get some of Mama’s time and attention.

The first time he asks, Mama laughs and says she’d figured that having a son would mean she wouldn’t have anyone to help with her hair and this is a nice surprise, and Ben is happy. Even though he doesn’t quite understand it, because Uncle Chewie’s people all groom each other instead of talking, boys and girls both, so why wouldn’t he?

But. Mama has her shields. And so he doesn’t know what Mama is thinking and feeling. Or when she’s telling him the truth.

Like when she says she loves him.

And then one night--- Mama has been away on something for the Senate for an entire week, and Ben is used to not seeing her much, but he hadn’t realized how much he would miss her if he didn’t get to see her at all.

So he waits up for her to get home. Sits on the stairs that overlook the entryway of their apartment and watches for her.

And then Mama’s coming in the door, and he feels his face light up---

Except that the first words out of her mouth are, "Oh, Ben, you ought to be in bed, where’s your nanny---"

And all of a sudden it is just too much.

He’s got to know.

He’s not even really thinking about it, and it’s not anything he’s ever tried before with anyone (because he’s never had to, he can always just hear what they’re thinking)---

But he reaches out and pushes on her shields.

There’s a heartbeat where she just freezes--- and then, for the first and only time, his mother touches his mind---

The horrible high-pitched whirring whine and the sharp astringent smell and over it all the rasp, the dreadful mechanical rasp of the respirator and the feeling of horror and fear and utter helplessness---

And the sense, the sense that’s more than words, overlaying it all---

His mother sends him to his Uncle Luke the next day.

Dad does not want him to go. But Mama says, and so Dad is the one who takes him to where Uncle Luke is training his first new Jedi students.

Ben feels from his dad’s mind that this is at least in part just until Leia cools down and talk her around when she’s calmer and so there is a part of Ben that hopes that his dad is going to come back for him soon.

So he watches as the Millennium Falcon takes off and leaves him behind and tries to swallow back his sobs and be a big boy.

Dad will come back for him.

Except that Dad doesn’t. Because Mama had said.
sathari: Rey and Kylo Ren in their duel on Starkiller Base with the caption "Force in Balance" (Rey and Kylo- Force in balance)
From: [personal profile] sathari
A/n: All previous content notes apply.

Uncle Luke asks him what happened. So Ben tells him.

Tells him--- because he’s still reeling from that, from what he’d felt and seen from Mama’s mind. Because he’s scared. He wants Uncle Luke to help.

And then Uncle Luke tells him. That what he does, naturally, hearing thoughts like that--- not just talking mind-to-mind--- is invasion of privacy. That he’s not allowed.

Except that he can’t touch the Force at all without hearing what other people are thinking.

Which means he can’t do anything of what he’s supposed to be learning. No matter how hard he tries.

The other students don’t say anything in front of Uncle Luke. But he hears them, when they think he can’t. Master Luke’s weak useless nephew and what a crybaby (because he does cry in the group practice session sometimes, because he’s frustrated) and bet he wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t Master Luke’s nephew and Senator Organa probably just wanted to get him off her hands---

And that last one especially feels too much like exactly what had happened.

And--- and---

There’s the simple fact that being locked up in his head like that, all by itself, after a lifetime of being able to feel people and feel the Force---

It’s like being locked up in a little room, with nothing, and nobody.

And then there’s the morning he wakes up and---

Everything is just a jumble--- shapes and colors and noise and feeling but he doesn’t understand what any of it is, can’t make it out---

In a panic, he reaches into the Force, even though he’s not supposed to because invasion of privacy---

And everything sorts itself out again, into the familiar sights and sounds and smells of Uncle Luke’s place.

For a moment, he’s tempted, just so tempted, to keep the contact with the Force---

Then he hears it from one of the other students--- just a casual thought, how Ben is a waste of all their time---

And he crawls back into his own mind.

But it happens again. The--- jumble. And again.

He starts slipping away from the others, whenever he can. He’d worked out the trick of it, back when he was still living with Mama--- and Dad (who had thought it was wizard, but Dad had thought mind-reading was wizard, too). Because Mama had her shields, and Ben had heard Uncle Luke say he thought she could learn to become invisible for real if she practiced with the Force.

Mama had said that was pointless, because a Senator was supposed to be visible. But Ben thought it sounded pretty neat. So he’d tried.

And he couldn’t exactly become invisible, but he could be just sort of... unremarkable. Uninteresting. Boring.

(Dad had said he thought that was better, because people would sure notice if they bumped into someone who wasn’t there. But the might not notice if they bumped into someone... boring.)

So Ben does that. And he sneaks off, on a succession of the planets they travel to, and finds places where people aren’t, so he can touch the Force again. Even if he can’t do anything with it--- not where other people are around, anyway. He’s not weak. But he’s still useless anyway.

He doesn’t quite stop hoping that Dad will come back. But Dad never does.

And that is pretty much his life.

That’s what he gets. And he knows damned well better than to ask for anything by now. Because he’d asked for his mother’s love, and she’d thrown him out of her head and out of her life (and he still has those nightmares with the whirring and the horror, when he’s not waking up to the world in a jumble because he’s just that out of touch with the Force). And then he’d asked Uncle Luke to make it better and Uncle Luke had made him lock himself up inside his own head.

He does not want to find out what else will get taken away from him if he asks for anything.

That’s even before he finds out about Sith containment cells. Being locked up away from the Force entirely. He’s pretty sure that that would be the next step, if he tried telling Uncle Luke how his Force talents work--- asking, oh, to go somewhere and live like his namesake had. Yeah, given what’s happened in his life so far when he’s asked for something, that’s probably the next step. And he does not think he could stand that. Not when everything gets jumbled if he goes too long without touching the Force.

And that is how it goes. Until the message.

Uncle Luke does not go looking for Ben that often. Ever, really. At twenty-four, Ben is not sure whether to take a kind of bitter pride in his own skill at making himself unremarkable, or to assume that Uncle Luke just doesn’t give a damn.

Ben has learned to take that bitter sort of pride in whatever of his Force skills he can manage, even as he’s grimly aware that he’s effectively useless for anything. Because the one thing that he’s being trained to do is something he can’t. Or rather, isn’t allowed to. Because invasion of privacy.

But this time Uncle Luke is looking for him. With the message.

From his mother.

After the recording plays, he sits on the couch in Uncle Luke’s study with his hands pressed between his knees, so that they won’t shake.

Darth Vader. Just like Darth Vader in his mother’s mind... is Grandfather.

Uncle Luke comes over and sits next to him. Puts an arm over his shoulders. He fights a twitch, because that is in fact the first time anyone has touched him--- possibly since Dad and Uncle Chewie hugged him goodbye. (It’s been easier not to be noticed, that’s all. Doesn’t mean it’s not lonely. Just... easier.) "There’s a story I’ve been wanting to tell you," he says. "I wanted to---" he lets out a breath--- "since you first came here--- but your mother didn’t want anyone to know about... our father."

And Uncle Luke tells him.

About Grandfather.

About Grandfather. The best starpilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior. Who had loved his wife and his children.

Who had, in fact, loved his children--- as in, Ben’s mother and uncle--- so much, so very much that he had--- had---

Had not just died for them. He had destroyed everything in his life for them. Had destroyed everything that he had worked for, and every other loyalty--- even his own master. For them. For his children.

Ben tries, and fails utterly, to imagine his mother doing that for him. Giving up the Senate, say, and the New Republic. It would be downright laughable as an idea, if it didn’t hurt so much.

But Grandfather--- had done exactly that. For his children. Because he loved them.

And it’s Grandfather whom he’d felt like in the Force to Mama, that night.

Which... means two things, as best as Ben can figure.

Grandfather’s Force talents might have worked something like Ben’s. Grandfather might not have minded... how Ben works. (Not invasion of privacy.) (And Grandfather who had loved his children enough to destroy everything for them--- surely he’d have loved his grandson, too. Surely.)

Grandfather had done that much for his children. And it’s still not enough for Mama.

She still hates him. Hates her own father. Who had destroyed everything in his life for love of her and Uncle Luke.

Hates him enough that she sent Ben away for being just like him.

Ben thinks he knows what’s behind his mother’s shields, at least.

Grandfather had given up everything for his children. And that’s not enough for Mama to love him back.

Mama had sent Ben away for being like her own father who had destroyed everything else in his life for them.

There is, therefore, nothing that Ben can ever do that will be enough for his mother to love him.

After he leaves Uncle Luke’s study, he goes out walking--- the world they’re on this time is pretty barren, a desert but for the climate which is cooler. Goes out farther than he ever has.

Then he finds a spot. Where he won’t even have to work to be unremarkable. Not that anyone would ever look for him anyway. Not that anyone ever does.

He’s thought about this before. Played with it a few times, even.

Uncle Luke had talked about it. How Yoda and Ben’s own namesake had just... dissolved into the Force. And Ben Kenobi and Yoda--- and even Grandfather--- had appeared to Uncle Luke a few times after that. Ben Kenobi had even told Uncle Luke that "Yoda will always be with you."

So it’s... not exactly like... dying. Trying to. Wanting to.

And he doesn’t--- exactly--- want to.

But--- just to be part of the Force. To be... part of the Force. To... belong.

And... maybe not to be... himself, so much. Not Master Luke’s weak useless nephew. Just... part of everything and belonging.

And sitting there in the bolthole he’d found for himself--- harder and harder to do that, the painful growth spurts had started at fifteen and the awkward, gangling body that just seems to take up too much space is one more thing he hates--- sitting there, he admits it to himself.

He’d been hoping, hoping all along. Even as it became more and more apparent that it was hopeless.

Maybe he’d be able to do--- something. Maybe even finish his Jedi training.

And that would be enough. For Mama to let him come home.

For Mama to love him.

But now he knows. Darth Vader is Grandfather and Mama hates him enough that she’d sent Ben away for being like him even after everything that Grandfather had given up because he loved her and Uncle Luke.

There is nothing he can do that will be enough for his mother to love him.

He leans back against the rough rock of the space he’d found, and concentrates on letting go of himself into the Force.

That is how the Supreme Leader finds him.

He owes the Supreme Leader a life debt. (Chewbacca’s nephew knows what that means.) And more than that, the Supreme Leader has a place and a purpose for him.

That’s more than his family ever had.

The Supreme Leader doesn’t believe governance should be a game of damned sabacc, a bunch of smiling liars scrambling over each other like clawclams in a bucket, either. The First Order will give the galaxy a united government, under the Supreme Leader’s wisdom. He won’t tolerate any of that--- lying.

That’s the purpose the Supreme Leader has for him. Who will be Ben Solo Organa no longer.

When he returns from his master’s trials in the Knights of Ren with a new name and a helmet and master’s mantle, the Supreme Leader even presents him with a gift.

Grandfather’s helmet. It’s his most cherished possession.

Grandfather would have loved him. He knows the Supreme Leader doesn’t approve of that motivation--- but he does approve Kylo Ren’s stated intention to finish what his grandfather had started.

To rebuild, rather, what his grandfather had torn down--- for the daughter who couldn’t bring herself to love him.

Much less her own son.

By the time his father comes for him, it’s far too late to make a difference. (Or so he tells himself.)

Wow, I really like this. It's a very realistic take at what might have went wrong for this family, and how even adults with the best of intentions can completely screw up a child.

I have not read any of the new EU yet so I don't know what Leia's relationship with Ben is like, but I can definitely see how the strained and distant relationship between them here can fit into canon.

I like the section where Ben realized that Leia couldn't possibly love him back if she didn't love Vader even though he gave up everything for her and Luke. It's completely twisted and so far from the truth, but I can see how Ben would believe it, and that's really tragic.

Ooooh and I like the parallels between Ben watching the Millennium Falcon take off in this fic, and young!Rey watching a different ship take off in Jakku in the movie - nicely done!

THANK YOU!!!! I am so glad this worked for someone*! And this:

It's a very realistic take at what might have went wrong for this family, and how even adults with the best of intentions can completely screw up a child.

THANK YOU for this especially! I am so glad it reads as realistic/believable. And I am also almost ridic invested in the idea of this generation of the Skywalker family being full of very loving, well-meaning adults none of whose backgrounds prepared them at all to raise a child. And who would especially have their own unresolved issues with certain personality traits and talents could all too easily get projected onto a kid who had those. (Also, the irony here is that it is in fact Ben's ~adored grandfather~ who fucked this up too--- not only is he the one who left Ben's Mama with a lot of trauma around mind-reading, not to mention the need for shields in the first place, but arguably if the Jedi Order hadn't been wiped out there would have been someone around to tell Luke and Leia that mind-reading itself is not necessarily Dark--- though on the flip side Leia probably would have had a fight on her hands if she'd wanted to raise her own kid at all or even know him in the first place, given the old Order's attitude toward attachment.) (Wow, I did not need the plotbunnies that's giving me. I already have too many WIPs.)

Man, the new EU is a giant cipher when it comes to Ben at all--- pretty much all we have is that he was sent away at a young age to train with Luke, that Luke is taking Ben and his other students around the galaxy (I think they're searching for Jedi temples and other Force artifacts?) and that Leia doesn't get to hear from them much. And that Ben is still apparently with Luke at the age of 23/24. So, basically, a VERY long-distance relationship at its best.

Oh, yes, I am so glad you took Ben's attitude toward Leia exactly how I meant to write it--- that it is Ben extrapolating a completely wrong conclusion from the data of which he's in possession. And, for that matter, precisely because it is so far from the truth and so much a result of the pre-existing mess in Ben's head, it never occurs to Luke that Ben might come to that conclusion, and so he doesn't think to address it. (Any more than, for that matter, it had occurred to Luke that mind-reading might be a natural part of how Ben interacts with the Force--- my headcanon is that Obi-wan and Yoda had a vested interest in directing Luke away from learning mind-reading, lest he pick up on his father's identity from someone.) (Don't get me started on the whole "patricide as rite of passage on BOTH sides of the Force," but... now I'm kind of regretting that I didn't work some Kyloesque snark on "killing my father, just like dear old Uncle Luke was supposed to do to Grandfather," into this. Oops.)

.... SQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQUUUUUUUUUUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! You caught the parallel between Ben's and Rey's experience of abandonment!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D I, um, might have all the feelings about the parallel and/or complementary issues around family and abandonment that Ben|Kylo and Rey have. (Ahem, I might be a little too invested about what happens if Rey ever gets that memory out of his head.)

Ugh I'm so sorry I didn't get back to writing you long-form comment earlier. Work was crazy and then I was sick and just - ugh. Suffice to say I hope you will not take it as a lack of interest, because this fic had me so rivited I just re-read it again to type this out.

And first of all...I just...MY HEART.

I've always had a love of the Skywalkers: Galaxy's Finest Fuck-Up's idea, where ALL of these people have such huge emotional baggage and none of them seem to be able to parse it very well, either due to the societies they're raised in (Anakin, Leia), or sheer belief that 'I'm right, the galaxy is wrong' (Luke, Padme, Kylo). It's amazing how badly things play out here, with the sins of the past (Vader->Leia) becoming the sins of the future (Leia->Ben).

And this Leia is so, so stunningly cold. I personally thought by TFA it was clear Leia was becomming more her father's daughter than her mother's and I think you can see that here: Leia's coldness is Vader's, the high shields the constant devotion to one cause. I wonder when the idea that Ben was like Vader came to her? The coldness seems to be something that she would have a very high difficulty overcoming - Leia was always her father's daughter in temperment, and both Padme and Bail could be cold when the situation called for it. But to think of her turning it on family is heartbreaking, and I'd love to hear this story from her perspective.

I'm also really interested in Anakin's powers being the same as Kylo's. The idea that his grandfather would be the one member of his family to love him is so, so heartbreaking (although I do think Vader //would// have absolutely loved Ben, as he loved Luke; Anakin wanted a family more than anything). I can imagine Luke being busy and overlooking Kylo's neediness, but gooood the desperation in Kylo. I don't think Luke really understood him at all and I can understand Anakin being equally desperate at times.

And the bits about him going somewhere where no one else is just heartbreaking and I really, really wish he could have had someonein his life there to help him - though it really feels like that's exactly what his problem is, everyone ignoring the elephant in the room and then being amazed when Kylo wants to see it. Of course Snoke found him; of course he took advantage. It's interesting that he doesn't approve of Kylo's motivation; I'd really like to know what he would approve of.

God my emotions in this fic! You've made it so visceral and all those bad decisions just come down like a house of cards. I really loved it and thank you so much for the great, great gift.

No worries--- it's totally okay; life happens, and this was a gift for you, so I'm just glad you enjoyed it!

the Skywalkers: Galaxy's Finest Fuck-Up's

YES THIS. Their roads to hell are all paved with love and good intentions. And, yes, you CALLED IT on, basically, the uniquely Skywalker spin on "intergenerational cycles of abuse"--- for all that Leia didn't grow up with Anakin|Vader for a parent, their interactions were such that they definitely left a mark. (I have ridic amounts of meta at my journal on these people, feel free to drop by and browse/comment, by the way!)

Leia's coldness: Oh, yeah. Leia's coping mechanisms are... in a weird way, she's almost what the Jedi Order would have wanted Anakin to be, that detachment. (Which, honestly, I've only just realized is a very likely outcome of her upbringing by the Organas--- they would have wanted to squelch any "Vader-like" tendencies in her.) And up in the first section I linked a couple of pieces of meta that I wrote about Everything What's Wrong of the Skywalkers by the time of TFA--- even before I picked up on that aspect of her adoptive parents' probable issues about her being like her father, she has a BOATLOAD of reasons to have ALL THE ISSUES around both her fathers, and by the same token this is Leia "We have no time for our sorrows" Organa, she's just shoving her personal shit under the bed and getting on with the business of founding a government... except, oh, now she's got a kid. And having a kid is one of those things that turns over Family Issues Rocks even for people whose Family Issues Rocks don't involve galaxy-spanning political conflict.

Also, I love your question about how Leia got the idea that Ben is like Vader--- because in fact it's basically a post-traumatic reaction trigger on her side. The way that Ben goes a-slamming into her shields, in a moment when she's already kind of tired and stressed and not on her A-game... feels to her in that moment so much like Vader's mind probe of her on the Death Star that she has a flashback. Which she then projects into his mind, so he experiences a piece of that trauma--- which is also interlaced with her own fear that she, or Luke, or Ben will ever be too much like Vader. (Skywalkers: finding all new and awful ways to do intergenerational cycles of dysfunction.) And, yeah, this story from Leia's perspective--- for one thing, one of the reasons she sends Ben away is that she knows she's not objective and can't see him clearly because of her own damage. And it's also a reason that Han goes along with it, around the general theme of, "Leia needs a cooling-off period." (Han knows about Leia needing cooling off periods when her blood and temper are up. Really he does.)

Honestly, I'm not sure in an "objective" sense how much Kylo|Ben's "power profile" is close to Anakin's... but! Further headcanon: Obi-wan and Yoda had a vested interest in Luke not learning much about mind-reading/emotion-sensing powers in the Force, precisely because of that whole "turning him into an unwitting patricide" that they were going for: they couldn't afford to have him pick up stray thoughts from them or Anakin|Vader or anyone else who might have known. So Leia and Luke's only experiences of "passive" telepathy or "mind-reading" (as opposed to using the Force to talk to each other) is in fact from Vader. (His mind probe of Leia on the one hand and then his "your thoughts betray you" to Luke on the second Death Star, which while not as deeply traumatic for Luke as Leia's experience was, would still have been deeply fraught for him.)

And, oh, yeah. Anakin. Anakin and loving his kids and his grandson and just ALL HIS FAMILY EVER. (Tangent: IMO, Leia married a man rather a lot like--- not the man her father actually became, but the ones that bitty!Anakin probably looked up to as role models living as a slave in Mos Espa, the spacers and the pilots he'd listen to, before he got taken for a Jedi.)

Oh, man, yeah, Ben just going and hiding himself and that his desperation comes through in the fic. (Honestly, the reason I haven't written a longer form of this, complete with Han, Luke, and Leia's POVs, and possibly Snoke cackling from the side and salting his popcorn with the tears of the Skywalkers until his cardiologist scolds him is because I BREAK MY OWN HEART with these people.) Seriously, there is so much frightened-damaged trying-to-scrabble-my-way-to-some-kind-of-purchase/grip-on-a-place that I see in Adam Driver's performance of Kylo, I just kind of worked backwards.

I really, really wish he could have had someonein his life there to help him - though it really feels like that's exactly what his problem is, everyone ignoring the elephant in the room and then being amazed when Kylo wants to see it.

A-yup! That is exactly it and one of the reasons I end up writing a lot of fixit where someone did. (Most recently, Five Times Ahsoka Tano Saved The Skywalkers and a sequel to the fifth time, the latter of which also addresses some of the Leia POV on Ben's early years.

It's interesting that [Snoke] doesn't approve of Kylo's motivation; I'd really like to know what he would approve of.

Mine is an evil laugh--- oh, yeah, that's a significant point. Snoke does not want to get tossed down a reactor shaft or the equivalent because Kylo Ren finally found someone who will love him back, especially if that someone is family. (This, IMO, is why it was Han, specifically, that Snoke tasked Kylo with killing: Ben was most attached to his father and even more to the point Han is the one who gave Ben the most unconditional positive regard, the one whose love and even approval for him were the least contingent on Ben doing or being anything in particular.) Snoke would very much like it if he can "break" Kylo into... well, basically, the dark-side mirror of Leia, who is primarily if not exclusively committed to the bigger picture and the cause and doesn't have all these fluffy soppy love-and-belonging ~feels~. (But as long as he can manipulate Kylo's damage to get him attaching to ~Grandfather~ as an abstraction, the boy's at least useful to him. But he still has to keep an eye on that--- hence killing Han.)

And, your last paragraph--- that is just about EVERYTHING I could have hoped for in your response to this fic and I am just sitting here glowing happily. I am just so glad that you liked it! (And, oh, yes, "all those bad decisions just come down like a house of cards"--- that is exactly what I was trying to get across; the only genuinely "bad actor" in the piece is Snoke (of course) and everyone else just screws up with the best of intentions and then, yep, house of cards.)

"Queen of Darkness", a poem by alexeigynaix

I begin to sing of Persephone,
the knowing one,
the holy,
and of Hades,
host of many,
wealthy one.

They'd met before, of course.
How could Demeter's daughter,
child of She who rules
what comes forth from the earth,
not have known of He who rules
what lies beneath the earth?

(It was Grandmother Gaia
who introduced Them,
and contrived that pomegranates
might grow in the underworld.)

Had Demeter had Her way,
of course,
Kore would have been
Kore always, Queen of flowers,
nothing more.

This maiden Goddess
wished for more.

And Hades was a friend to her,
and one She felt She might
come to love as greatly
as Hera loved Zeus,
as Aphrodite loved Hephaistos.

So She spoke to Hades,
and told Him what She wished.
He in turn spoke to Her father,
loud-thundering Zeus.

It was custom in those days
that a man seeking a bride
might tell the girl's father
of his wishes,
and steal her—if "steal"'s the word—
from her loving mother,
sisters, friends.
If the girl herself did not wish it,
custom said,
her father must refuse.

So Kore danced with friends,
cousins, half-sisters:
the Mousai, the Charites, the Horai,
and Athena saw the chariot
and shouted warning to Kore
and Kore said to let Him come.

She shrieked once,
as the darkness
closed in upon Her.

Hekate heard, and Helios,
and Those who gathered up
the flowers from the crown
that had fallen from Kore's brow.
No more.

Athena and Kalliope
counseled Their sisters,
cousins, friends
to speak nothing of that day,
especially to Demeter.

Yet Hekate did not hear this,
and after nine days of
Demeter's grief,
She told Demeter
what She heard.
Nor did Helios hear the wise counsel,
and when Demeter came to Him,
He told her all He'd seen.

On that very day,
Kore wed Hades
with a splendid
golden crown
upon Her brow
and twelve young women of the Dead
as Her silent attendants.
She shared a pomegranate,
with Her husband,
and said to Him,
"My name is Persephone."
No longer Kore, maiden,
but Bringer of Death,
Queen to the All-receiver.

A year passed
in Demeter's realm,
a year of harsh summer
in Attic lands,
chill winter farther north.
No grain sprouted,
no corn arose
from blessings the Corn Mother
refused to speak.

Blessings She did grant,
Mysteries at Eleusis
of which we cannot speak.
But no grain grew.

Zeus the thundering
on learning what was wrong
sent fleet-footed Hermes
to Hades's land,
to ask His wife
to return to Her mother
and be gentle to the
hungry people.

Grandmother Gaia
warned Demeter
that had Her daughter eaten
of fruits of the underworld
then Demeter's daughter
could never fully return
to the sunlit lands.

How Demeter wept
when Persephone came forth,
restored to Her,
and how much louder did She weep
when Persephone informed Her
of the pomegranate at
the wedding feast.

And so for half the year,
or perhaps a third,
and which part depends
on which part of the world,
Persephone is Queen
of Darkness,
of the final, peaceful rest.
For the remainder of the year
She dances with Her friends,
Her cousins and half-sisters,
weaving flower crowns
in sight of Demeter.
But still She is Persephone,
for Kore is a seeming
who lies underground forever.
Still She is Queen,
still Hades is Her king.

Come now, dark Persephone,
and Hades of the wealth within the earth.
For my song please grant me
possessions pleasing the heart.
I shall remember You
and another song also.

I'm drawing heavily, including some turns of phrase, from the Apostolos N. Athanassakis translation of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, #2 in his volume The Homeric Hymns. I'm also including significant personal interpretation. I hope this pleases you!

"Not so bad for a human," the Doctor told her, even though she had just saved not only herself, but him and the whole planet they were on. She stared at him in disbelief before shoving him.

"I was fantastic!" she said, stealing his own word. She smiled brilliantly, and he mirrored it slowly, before he hugged her close.

"Yes, Rose Tyler, you are fantastic!" he agreed. She caught the change on the verb, and it made her smile change, becoming softer, before she decided to sneak a kiss.

That he cooperated fully was just one more fantastic thing shared.

I thought that Han's line about there being "too much Vader in him" was one of the more disturbing that we hear in TFA, and one that didn't make much sense, given that Han knew that Leia and Luke were both Anakin's children. I really like this HC here because it imparts some sense to that idea. Ben doesn't have "too much Vader in him," per se; he has (or as a child, had) the same set of potential Skywalker issues that Anakin, Luke, and Leia all had. But neither Luke nor Leia was raised by people who both a) knew their biological paternity and b) hated Anakin/Vader on a passionate, visceral level. Anakin turned out the way he did largely because of authority figures' unattainable and often-conflicting ideas of what he should be: The submissive slave, the docile padawan, the deadly warrior, the just knight, the surrogate brother, the surrogate son, the political ally both for Palpatine andfor Padmé's fledgling opposition movement... There's a lot of poignant irony to Leia (and the people who know how much she's been through and want to support her), with the best of intentions, repeating the mistake and saddling Ben with the same sort of problems that pushed his grandfather to borderline insanity.
