Ino/Sakura - Practice

mornelithe_falconsbane: (WHAT???)
From: [personal profile] mornelithe_falconsbane
"It makes no sense to jump in with no practice," Ino said, stirring her tea into a whirlpool as she mixed in a ungodly amount of sugar. "We wouldn't do a new jutsu for the first time in a real fight, right?"

That was very logical, Sakura decided--Ino usually was. "You're right. But who are we going to practice on? It's not like we could ask our teachers..." she trailed off, the thought of asking Tsunade suddenly filling her mind. "I mean, I guess we could."

"Nope, total no go, take that thought and put it back into your id where it belongs," Ino said sharply, wrinkling her nose in disgust. "We practice on each other, obviously."

Sakura gulped her tea, burning her mouth and throat. Ino's steady gaze didn't waver, and Sakura grabbed a tiny dessert from the their shared plate and shoved it into her mouth.

The bustle of the teashop filled the silence, the creaking thump of someone running across the roof and the shivering dust spinning down from the rafters providing a lovely counterpoint to Sakura's thoughts.

She chewed, meeting Ino's unwavering eye-contact with unwavering eye-contact of her own. Is this a test? Sakura wondered, dabbing at her mouth with a napkin. ...I refuse to fail it. "Well we should probably go somewhere quieter, don't you think?" Sakura finally answered, silently healing her scalded tongue.

Ino's smile lit up her face, and Sakura grinned back, relieved that she'd made the right choice. "I know just the training ground!"

Ino's training ground was isolated, small, and way out of the way. It was surrounded by a bunch of willow trees overlooking the river, curtains of branches providing privacy, and the river itself obscuring sound. "Geez, you been planning this much?" Sakura asked, glancing at Ino out of the corner of her eye.

Ino's cheeks pinked but she didn't waver, grabbing Sakura's hand and dragging her into the canopy of a nearby willow tree. "We had a clean-up mission here before the Chuunin exams. It was a cool training ground, so I remembered it. You got a problem with that, Sakura?"

Sakura made an unimpressed noise just to screw with her, and waited impatiently for Ino to do something. It was Ino's idea, so obviously Ino should take the lead.

Faced with Sakura's best poker face, Ino seemed oddly hesitant. "You still onboard, forehead?"

"Yep." Sakura directed all of her considerable focus remaining calm. If Ino thought she was too eager--Sakura frowned. "You getting cold feet, Pig?"

"No!" Ino's grip on her hand tightened, and Sakura's stomach twisted. "Okay, whatever, I'm just going to do it."

Sakura's heart skipped a beat, her blood pounding through her body like she was about to start a fight. She stiffened her spine and met Ino's gaze head on, her mouth stern and entirely uninterested.

Ino closed her eyes, breathed in slowly, and then wrapped her arm around Sakura's waist, pulling them together. Ino was a little taller than her, and Sakura had to look up to see Ino's vividly blue eyes flicker open, study Sakura's face, and then drift closed again as Ino carefully pressed her lips against Sakura's.

Ino's lips were very, very soft. Sakura's heart was going to explode if she didn't breathe soon.

The wind rustled through the trees, and Ino pulled away, leaving Sakura's mouth tingling and her palms sweaty. It's just a practice kiss, Sakura told herself fiercely. It doesn't count!

"How was that?" Ino asked.

Sakura tried to answer, and ended up gasping for breath, her face burning as the blush she'd been holding back since they left the teahouse rushed in. "Are we supposed to breathe during it, do you think?" she asked, thinking quickly.

"I was breathing," Ino said. "I mean, it was kind of difficult because I was trying not to breathe hard or anything, but--"

"Yeah, I think your way is better," Sakura said. "Holding my breath felt weird, and then it was pretty obvious after--"

"It was," Ino agreed, frowning. "Did you want to try again? You breathing this time? I could try holding my breath, maybe there's a trick to it."

Sakura's knees felt wobbly, and she had to discreetly dry her hands on her skirt, but she tilted her head up and kissed Ino anyway--there was no sense in training any skill to anything but mastery.

Heartbreak is a beautiful thing. It is the womb of wisdom, the womb of art; if Charles Emerson Winchester the Third were a religious man, he would call it a blessing. So it is strange-- unbearably strange-- for Charles to find himself back in Beacon Hill, drinking tea with old friends, with nothing to talk about; no stories, no insights; only the barest remembrance of how to tamp down his irritation and behave civilly in civil company.

His record is still remarkable, of course. His knowledge and skills are still remarkable-- so within two years he is appointed the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts, and in two years and six months he is delivering a lecture at the New England Symposium on Trauma & Critical Care to a mostly enthralled audience.

He is leaned against a podium, frowning neutrally at the audience as he speaks at length on the surgical repair of popliteal aneurysm, when he sees the familiar face of Benjamin Pierce in the fifth row.

They make eye contact, and Charles pauses. He expects some kind of disruption-- catcalling, heckling, the kind of reception Hawkeye would have incited at the 4077th-- but Hawkeye just sits and listens, all his mischief contained in a private wry smile. Charles recovers himself and thereafter ignores the other man, but during the questions portion of the talk he feels impatient, drawn tight, all of his answers terse and dismissive.

Afterwards, the audience disperses, and Hawkeye comes up to him, still smiling-- but instead of greeting him like an actual polite member of society, Hawkeye claps him on the shoulder and turns, urging Charles forward and walking beside him. He says, "Not bad, Charles-- that was only half as dry as the martinis you're about to buy us."

"We're not all entertainers, Pierce," Charles says, but he falls into step beside him.

Hawkeye guides them down the hallway to the hotel restaurant and bar, but before they pass through the door, he stops and faces Charles. "You planning to attend any more talks today?"

Charles looks past Hawkeye, down the hallway at the men arranged in clusters on the plush carpet, faces decked in collegial, half-interested smiles. "Yes," he says, mouth curling, "I'm sure I care what these cretins have to say about percutaneous drains." As an afterthought, he looks back at Hawkeye and asks, "Are you?" They are exchanging pleasantries.

Hawkeye grins, and that's when Charles realizes Hawkeye's still holding his shoulder.

"What, me? No." He shakes Charles a little. "I came for the dancing."

I really loved this! It's so interesting to think of Charles post-series and how the war affected him (in ways similar to as well as different from Hawkeye and the rest). It was a great prompt and what you did with it was brilliant. Bravo!

NB: does this count as kidfic

If there's one thing being half-married to Uchiha Sasuke will do for you, it will give you a heightened tolerance for complexity-- so Sakura has long since ceased having any concerns about her relationship with Ino.

Ino is bossy, and somewhere along the line it became clear to Sakura that she likes it. It is what it is. By her late twenties, Sakura has lived a lot of life, has watched her own child struggle, and she no longer worries about being much other than what she is. She doesn't compete with it, she doesn't resent it: she likes it.

She likes it better than all Kakashi's anxious obfuscations, better than Naruto's bluster, better than Sasuke's penitent impassivity.

She likes Ino at the end of a meal at a restaurant-- Sai standing behind the booth, eyes on Naruto (cagey, conflicted Naruto) waiting on him to pay out so they can leave on a two-week trip to the capital-- and Ino bundling up Inojin and Sarada, then tapping Sakura on the arm and saying, "You, you're with me."

She likes it later when Ino stares at her from beneath, mouth open, legs splayed-- Sakura's hand low on her stomach, manipulating her body from the outside, a ribbon of pleasure inside Ino spinning out from Sakura's palm-- and Ino's eyebrows drawn together with what looks like anger, her firm voice saying, "yes."

She likes Ino in general.

There is a terrible irony at work in their day-to-day lives. Sakura is a celebrity, an Uchiha, a member of the legendary Team Seven, a war hero, even though she lost basically nothing in the Fourth War. Meanwhile, Ino has little renown outside of Konoha, and she came out of the Fourth War as a nearly empty casing; in the subsequent years there was a time when it looked like the remaining substance would turn fetid. When she slumps tiredly against Sakura after a mission, it is a relief.

When she jokes with Inojin; when she laughs at Naruto's awkwardness; when she smiles wryly from five inches away, across a pillow, deep lines of contentment on her face, it is a relief.

The yielding and the commanding, both of them-- that's what Sakura likes. She likes when she wakes up next to Ino in the Yamanaka Compound, Ino leveraging herself up on sleep-warm limbs, pressing her mouth against Sakura's forehead, then saying, "I'll get the kids ready, you make breakfast."

Don't worry, it's not kid fic! I loved this as well (you wrote so much for me and it's all so great!)! This look into their future is wonderful; it's pretty much exactly what I would want for them.

Also this one! I only saw the request for pinch hits last week; sorry this is late and also short and kind of a bummer. Thank you for your awesome prompts.

TenTen makes a subdued, inarticulate sound of rage when Kabuto fumbles the first round of Edo Tensei seals.

The second time, he gets it right, and the features of the formerly dying Rock Country body cover over with ash, which blows away to reveal the beatific face of Hyuuga Neji. His white eyes blink open. He looks over at TenTen, and his cracked, grey-tinged face smoothes into an expression of wonder she hasn't seen there in years.

They fight as a seamless unit, like always. He moves like Neji, talks like Neji-- his death isn't real, yet, anyway-- and it's easy to forget he isn't alive until he is pushing the husk of the Holy Tree away from TenTen, saying, "You were caught in the doujutsu." What had it been like, wide awake, watching them be pulled into the Infinite Tsukuyomi and wrapped up in tree bark?

Afterwards, shinobi of all villages mill around trying to reorganize themselves. TenTen, Neji and Lee rest in an empty tent, sitting cross-legged on the ground near each other, staring down at their hands.

Eventually, Neji says, "I have to go soon."

TenTen pulls in a sharp breath and her eyes fall closed.

"In the Tsukuyomi," Lee says, then stops to clear his throat. Neji looks at him, and his expression is so open, his normal impassivity replaced by fondness and regret.

Lee says, voice thick with grief, "I dreamed of you."

Neji reaches for him. Lee's shoulders tense, but he lets the reanimated body of his friend draw their mouths together. TenTen stands and closes the flap door to the tent.

Later, TenTen sprawls over Neji, resting her face against his stomach, Neji's hand threaded in her unbound hair, while he and Lee kiss drowsily. There are blankets and cloaks spread out beneath them. "I have to go soon," Neji says again.

Lee says nothing, but TenTen can hear his slow, measured breaths. She murmurs, "We will honor you."

Neji runs his hand over her shoulder. He presses a kiss against Lee's throat. "I am already honored."

In a few hours time, Lee and TenTen will accompany Neji to the holding block to find Kabuto; they will report to Darui, TenTen's commanding officer, and begin to mobilize for the return home; they will learn that Gai-sensei is still alive. In the meantime, they curl against each other at the edges of the battlefield while Neji watches over them, dozing in a circle of warmth.

Damn. I don't know what to say to this. Except that you killed me (in a good way). I teared up at Lee's "I dreamed of you". Oh man. I guess leaving a comment saying I'm speechless with emotion, is bad form, but that's what I am. Just TEAM GAI ;________; I want them to be together forever and ever and ever ;____;
(your writing is breathtaking and I am so so grateful!) But seriously, TEAM GAI!!!
