AO3 Name: [ profile] Morbane
Other Profiles: LJ, DW

General DNWs: Gifs. Please don't give me gifs. Otherwise - amnesia where not present in canon or used as a humorous or romantic set-up. Harm to hands. Substance abuse, especially narratives about people trying and failing to resist addiction.
General Likes: Worldbuilding, original characters, outsider viewpoints. Loyalty. Magical realism. Trains, cities, dramatic weather. Wishes and their consequences. Mentors and their protegé(e)s. Competent characters - or characters who screw up and then learn from their mistakes. Descriptions of skills and technical or practical processes, or things that are very specific to a location and time. Complicated consequences of simple things. Uplifting and hopeful messages. Cool gadgets and enthusiasm for scientific innovation. Beautiful animals or beautiful landscapes or beautiful homes. Wingfic. Vivid colours and textures. Multiple identities and identity porn (especially the kind where person A has secret reasons for protecting or helping person B, but to person B, A is an ordinary stranger).

I enjoy reading about functional and respectful romantic or platonic relationships, but I also enjoy really screwed-up relationships. I like stories about characters' relationships shifting - about those relationships changing due to changing loyalties, or simply due to time and life experience. Or in characters whose relationships to each other are determined from moment to moment by roles they are otherwise required to play. I'm just as interested in break-ups as get-togethers.

For porn specifically, my favourite tropes include: awkward sex, praise kink, telepathy, xeno, touch starvation, dub-con, non-con.

I like morally ambiguous characters - pretty much every shade of gray except Absolute Cartoon Villain, and even those are fun in works where the overall tone is appropriately cartoonish. I like stories that appear very differently when seen through different characters' eyes.

Use first, second, or third person, or past or present tense, as you prefer.

For art specifically, I like character studies, action poses, art that includes a room or a landscape, dramatic weather, textures of clothes or other objects... I like art deco and art nouveau styles, or art done like a stained glass window. I like earth tones and jewel tones. I love geometric/floral/etc patterns incorporated in an artwork.

Rec for nonfiction books:

WHAT KIND OF NATION: Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, and the Epic Struggle to Create a United States by by James F. Simon

Detailing the decades of political and legal conflict between the president Thomas Jefferson and John Marshall to define what kind of government the Constitution was designed to establish, the book is a very interesting and informed read about how the United States is defined through the debates. The writer has a keen eye for context and impassive attitude towards these two historical figures, and is good at making the book informative and enjoyable to read.

Connections by James Burke is a very informative read on how instead of a series of isolated events, history comes from previous generations (an even eras) can give rise to new ideas and modes of thinking. It's both informative and a very good read. For example, who would have thought Chinese study of dynamites leads to Arabian invention of ice cream?

I hope you will find them enjoyable, but I'm curious to know what you'd think about them, good or bad, but don't feel that it's an obligation.

I'm not sure if this is up your alley (and it very well may not be), but it's sort of history and a little politics all in one? I read it recently so it came to mind.

China's Hidden Children: Abandonment, Adoption, and the Human Costs of the One-Child Policy - Kay Ann Johnson
This book goes into the effects of the one-child policy, and the history of the population control in China. There were a lot of things I didn't know about it and learned through reading.

Another book I read about a lesser-known tale in history:
Trail of Hope: The Anders Army, An Odyssey Across Three Continents - Norman Davies

For all I knew a lot about WWII, this is one part of it that I had never heard about until I read that book, and I found it interesting.

Material culture nonfiction recs

From: [personal profile] lilymaid
I hope these recs are what you're looking for. I'm an interior design student so a lot of these were encountered from that perspective.

The Architecture of Happiness, Alain de Botton: it's pretty well explained in the title; the author tries to explain what makes architecture pleasing to people. It's thought-provoking even if you don't agree with it.
Infrastructure, Brian Hayes: Did you ever wonder what those things you see on the side of the road are? What those buildings are? A lot of things have to do with infrastructure, and this is a field guide to transportation and utilities.
Last Harvest, Witold Rybczynski: the story of an American housing development as it's in progress
Man of War, Charlie Schroeder: author goes to a bunch of war re-enactments and hangs out with the people who do them. and who buy and make a whole bunch of stuff in order to do it "correctly"
The Future of the Past, Alexander Stille: a bit on both material culture and history, how our technology and attitudes now affect the way we perceive and interpret history and historical artifacts
The Edifice Complex: How the Rich and Powerful Shape the World, Deyan Sudjic: on how what the rich choose to build influences everything around the structure
The Language of Things: Understanding the World of Desirable Objects, Deyan Sudjic: Yeah, he shows up a lot--most of his books are about how design and architecture influence society. This one is about design makes us want stuff.

Lessa and Ramoth ficlet, Dragonriders of Pern, G

tonepoem: (Menolly)
From: [personal profile] tonepoem
Lessa was curled up beneath fur-lined blankets in her weyr, not quite awake, not quite asleep either. After years of sleeping in drudge quarters, she liked the luxury of blankets, and never took them for granted the way many of the dragonriders did. Even here, inside, the air smelled faintly crisp, of the weather turning winter-ward.

You need your morning klah, Ramoth said. Ramoth, for her part, sounded entirely awake, and serious with it, too.

Since when do you care about waking me up when it doesn't involve oiling all that hide? Lessa teased.

You like being warm. Ramoth sounded smug. Of course she would. Even mind-to-mind Lessa could feel the heat of the Hatching Grounds.

You mean you like being warm, Lessa said affectionately. Still, she oughtn't take Ramoth's good humor for granted, not when she had a clutch.

Klah, Ramoth said again. Because I can't get it for you.

Lessa blinked. It wasn't often that Ramoth remarked on things like that. "If it makes you happy," she said aloud, and slipped out of bed.

Thank you! I like the way their thoughts intertwine - Lessa observing the weather (I like 'turning winter-ward'!), and Ramoth building on that to decide that Lessa needs to be warmer - and how much they take for granted noticing and responding to each other's most basic thoughts and needs and reactions.

It is most pleasing to get this treat! (though now I wish I were back in bed too.)

Emory is pretty much what I'd always expected it to be, except scarier. I swear this school is bigger than West Covina (okay, so, that's probably not true; still feels that way). People are young and vibrant, and I feel old and a little ridiculous. Classes are great, though. I'm truly learning something here.

Yes, perfect. Greg would totally be sensitive to being a 'mature student' (as they are called here) and declare himself an old man, Josh would definitely put earnest but a bit general/cheesy motivational messages into his emails, White Josh would have more specific & helpful yet slightly more patronising advice, Darryl would have no chill, and Greg and Rebecca would go back to trying to impress each other. A+ everyone.

Okay, this is almost worth buying *just* for the cover art; I first learned about the book through the artist's website, weirdly, because he also illustrates covers for Star Wars books.

However, it's also quite readable and entertaining for an academic study, and the subject matter, the North American manga industry, ought to be of interest to anime/manga fans generally. It also has a gender studies/feminist slant to it, which I must say I appreciate greatly.

Dear Morbane,

I can't recommend you much, unfortunately, but this like of yours "Wishes and their consequences" stood out for me and made me immediately think of this 12 episode anime, that also happens to be an all-time favorite of mine: Madoka Magica (★Magica)

Please be aware that the MAL site may contain spoilers - those should be avoided at all costs! Also, please trust me on this, watch at least up to the end of episode 3!

Happy further unboxing! :)

Fill: Dragons

Date: 2017-09-24 02:12 am (UTC)
estirose: A girl in odd clothing dances in front of some fuzzy creatures (Erion)
From: [personal profile] estirose
Katida stared at her friend Cindro, who flapped a wing at her lazily, inviting her to come into his lair. It was a rare honor, she knew, even for people who had known a dragon for decades to be invited into a dragon's lair, and she bowed at the honor.

There was a smile on his face, she knew, because she'd spent her life around him and he her, and had deigned to accompany her on more than one of her adventures. The fact that a dragon could shapechange wasn't something commonly known to the people, but he'd told her. Maybe because he loved her, maybe because he knew that she could keep a secret. Had they been the same species, she thought, they might have married, but that was not in the cards.

But Cindro - Svedcindromerkredo, but that formal name seemed far too formal now - was a dragon, and she a human.

She stepped inside, making slow steady steps towards him. It was the same careful walk anyone would make towards one of the great ones because she wanted to honor him in the place where he lived. When she judged she'd walked far enough to be polite but not far enough to be dangerous, she stopped.

"Took you long enough," Cindro said, but there was a laugh in there, and only mild reprimand.

"I at least have manners when visiting someone's home for the first time," she retorted, but she made sure that her tone was light so that he wouldn't take offense.

"I only did that once." He stretched. "Ah, I miss those times. But duty must be tended to, don't you agree?"

"Yes." It was the main reason that Cindro had left their party. Cindro was now old enough to do the duty all good dragons had. Find a mate as well, eventually, probably long after Katida was dead. He would live for much longer than her. "Are you being pressured to find a mate?" she asked.

"Yes." He said. "I'll look for one, eventually. My sister Reika promises that she'll help me." He rolled his eyes.

"Teoreikaapogisinal? Really?" she asked. It felt like she was visiting a friend in his home, not a dragon in his lair.

"She'd thud you with her wing if you called her that! No need to be formal." His form shimmered, became smaller, became human. "You are practically a part of our family, after all."

Katida had to wonder how many people he'd say that to in his lifetime. Probably a lot - he was a kind dragon, after all.

He took her hands in his, though she was aware that they were transformed claws. "Go and see her," he said. "We both loved adventuring with you. I know she regrets having to go so far away, btt that was where she was needed."

"I will, she promised.

Cindro leaned down and kissed her, catching her by surprise. "And then hurry back. The town needs you, too."

"I know," she said, only managing that much after being positively stunned by his action. She wondered if he really was in love with her, and reminded herself that she was but a mayfly by his standards.

"Travel safe," he said. It wasn't a dismissal. That wasn't how Cindro worked. It was just a friend's words to another friend.

She just nodded and shouldered her pack. Reika's lair was a long trip, a very long trip, and to honor that wish she had to be prepared. Reika and Cindro would understand.

"Sing for me as I go?" she asked.

"I will do that." There was a pause in his words, as if he'd meant to say something else, but she didn't even want to think about what it could be.

As she left, she heard him singing her favorite song in his pleasant baritone. She smiled even more as she stepped out of his cave, one more step towards her home and her promise.

I like that this is a combination of significant moments (first invitation into home; preparing for a long journey) and slice-of-life-style comfort with each other.

The back and forth of are they friends, is this something more, is a lot of fun, and I enjoy all the many hints about the larger world.

Thank you! :D
